Position Purpose:

The Sr. Research and Development Chemist supports Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Sales and Marketing by developing and managing all new formulations and manufacturing processes to use in new products. The Sr. Research and Development Chemist also works closely with the R&D Manager, Product Development, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Technical Services, Quality Assurance and Quality Control staff. This role is also responsible for the testing and approvals/rejections of all new development and manufactured bulk products.

The Sr. Research and Development Chemist will develop and manage end to end new bulk product formulations through manufacturing transfer; conduct research on raw materials, discover and create innovative products as they apply to Gilchrist & Soames and other category verticals.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Research and develop innovative and novel personal care formulations

  • Independently supports the needs of Product Development, Technical Services, Sales, Marketing, Purchasing and other business functions to provide formulations that meet both internal and external customers' needs for cost, performance, stability, and regulatory requirements.

  • End-to-end formulation development through to transfer to manufacturing

  • Work closely with internal and external partners to research innovations and suggest product performance evaluations to support product concepts

  • INCI review and approval

  • Write batch records for chemicals used, specifications and processing instructions

  • Manage external manufacturers of our products to ensure that correct chemicals and processes are used, and that performance and cost parameters are met by them.


  • BA / BS in chemistry


  • 7 Years in developing toiletry / cosmetic formulations


  • Excellent knowledge of personal care chemicals.

  • Excellent formulation and processing skills for personal care formulations.

  • Some knowledge of cosmetic regulations.

  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and professional interactive skills are necessary to perform at a high degree of proficiency. Capable of working with internal staff from other departments in a proactive and constructive manner.

  • Able to engage and lead R&D schedule and concept discussions within meetings. Understands team dynamics and works well within a team structure. Collaborative working style.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple initiatives/deadlines autonomously and shift priorities as necessary. Able to manage large, complex projects. Uses time effectively.

  • Customer Service - Respond promptly to requests for service and assistance as needed. Follow up as needed.

  • Problem Solving - Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner. Gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Develops and collaborates on alternative solutions

  • Professionalism - Approaches others in a tactful manner. Reacts well under pressure. Follows through on commitments.

  • Excellent attention to Detail and accuracy.

  • Proficient use of MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and Internet navigation.
